Virtualization Defined

Definitions of Virtualization by users and experts.

Virtualization
Virtualization is software that separates an application from the underlying physical hardware on which it runs. It allows a single piece of hardware such as a server to support many applications, thereby running the software more efficiently and at lower cost.

Virtualization Initiatives in the AHE
Virtualization:
- [Is an] Extension of the concepts used in traditional mainframe environments into the distributed computing/server environment.
- Allows multiple virtual machines to share the resources of a single physical machine.
- Processor, Memory, disk storage, and network controller resources on a single physical machine can be virtualized and seamlessly shared across multiple virtual machines - each of which are seen as dedicated hardware resources to the operating systems running within the virtual machines.

Test Optimization Using Software Virtualization
What is virtualization?
- Multiple OS or "Virtual Machines" installed on one physical machine.
- VMs run in parallel to one another
- VMs don't realized they are virtualized
- Each VM is isolated from the others
- The host simulates a hardware environment for each VM
- 'Guest' OS may vary in type
- Limited only by hardware
